Description

Cassatt writes to her biographer: "I am receiving letters telling me that your book is written in a charming style"

American-born painter and printmaker (1844-1926) who lived much of her adult life in France and became one of the leading figures of the Impressionist movement. Described by Gustave Geffroy as one of ‘les trois grandes dames’ (the three great ladies) of Impressionism, Cassatt often created images of the social and private lives of women, with particular emphasis on the intimate bonds between mothers and children. ALS in French, one page both sides, 4.75 x 6.5, Villa Angletto letterhead, December 28, [1913]. Handwritten letter to writer and art critic Achille Segard, in full (translated): "Thank you so much for your kind wishes, and please accept my best wishes for you, Mrs. Segard, and your children for 1914. I am receiving letters telling me that your book is written in a charming style. I have not received the newspaper articles you mentioned. It is so difficult for me to see my name in a newspaper. But I hope the book will be successful after all the effort you have put into it. We have had glorious weather here, and all the sunshine we missed so much this summer. Once again, a thousand wishes for health and happiness for all." In fine condition.

In 1913, Achille Segard published 'Mary Cassatt: Un peintre des enfants et des mères,' the earliest biography of the American painter, which was based on a series of interviews with her. She took an active role in the book's writing and publication, as evidenced by some of her correspondence with Segard.
