Description

Partly-printed DS as president, one page, 8.5 x 11, February 18, 1875. President Grant authorizes and directs the Secretary of State to cause the Seal of the United States to be affixed to “a Postal Arrangement between the United States and the Dominion of Canada.” Signed boldly at the conclusion by President Ulysses S. Grant. In fine condition, with some light creasing and a short fold split.

The document relates to the postal arrangement between the United States and the Dominion of Canada that took effect on February 1, 1875, which simplified cross-border mail service by allowing letters to be prepaid at the sender’s domestic postage rate, with the receiving country delivering them free of charge, replacing a more complex system of transit fees and separate accounting. The agreement was among the last bilateral postal conventions concluded before the United States and Canada joined the newly formed General Postal Union later that year, the forerunner of the Universal Postal Union, which standardized international mail on a global basis.
