World War I-dated partly-printed DS as president, one page, 17 x 13.25, July 21, 1917. President Wilson assigns William Coffin, of Kentucky, as “a Consul General of Class four of the United States of America…at Christiania, Norway…and I do hereby pray and request His Majesty, the King of Norway, His Governors and Officers to permit the said William Coffin fully and peacefully to enjoy and exercise the said office.” Signed crisply at the conclusion by Woodrow Wilson, and countersigned by Frank Polk as Acting Secretary of State. The embossed off-white wafer seal remains affixed to the lower left. In fine condition. Kristiania was the official name for Norway's capital city from 1624 until 1925, when it was changed back to Oslo, reflecting Norwegian independence from Danish rule, as the name Christiania (after Danish King Christian IV) was imposed after the medieval city burned.
