Description

Verne reports on his early writings—including plays, stories, and "tragedies, dramas, comedies, Italian comedies, melodramas, and vaudevilles in prose and verse, which will never see the light of day"

ALS in French, two pages on two adjoining sheets, 4 x 5.25, August 6, 1902. Handwritten letter to author Henri d'Almeras, who was then working on 'Avant la gloire, leurs débuts [Before Glory: Their Beginnings],' confiding information about his past life, his work, and his early writings. In part (translated): "Given my current state of eyesight, affected by cataracts, I have some difficulty writing; you will therefore excuse me if I answer your questions only briefly.

1. Adrien Talexy was a pianist of considerable talent, a composer whose biography you should easily be able to find.

2. 'Les Pailles rompues' [The Broken Straws] was first performed at the Théâtre Historique, then for a long run at the Théâtre du Gymnase.

3. 'La chanson de Gabiers' [The Song of the Gabiers] must have been written around 1850 and was sung by Bataille, my compatriot and Hignard's.

4. It was Bréhat who first introduced me to Hetzel in 1861.

5. Before 'Cinq semaines en ballon' [Five Weeks in a Balloon], I had published seven or eight short stories in the 'Musée des familles' [Museum of Families] and written the libretti for Hignard's 'Le Colin Maillard' [Blind Man's Buff], 'Les Compagnons de la Marjolaine' [The Companions of the Marjolaine], 'L'Auberge des Ardennes' [The Inn of the Ardennes], and 'Mr de Chimpanzé' [Mr. Chimpanzee], comic operas performed at the Théâtre Lyrique and the Bouffes…

I should add that I have in my portfolio tragedies, dramas, comedies, Italian comedies, melodramas, and vaudevilles in prose and verse, which will never see the light of day.

There, dear Sir, is the little information I can give you, and I beg you to believe me yours sincerely." In fine condition. Accompanied by a small portrait of the author.
