Description

Uncommon presidential appointment by Zachary Taylor, commissioning a justice of the peace for Washington, D.C.

Partly-printed DS as president, signed “Z. Taylor,” one page, 14.5 x 9.5, June 12, 1849. President Taylor appoints Joseph W. Beck as "a Justice of the Peace, in the County of Washington, in the District of Columbia." Signed at the conclusion in ink by President Zachary Taylor, and countersigned by Secretary of State John M. Clayton. The embossed white paper seal affixed at the lower left remains intact. Affixed at the top to a larger mount and in fine condition, with two tape stains at the top edge, and a small split to the bottom edge. Taylor's presidential commissions are quite uncommon, as he served only 16 months before suddenly passing away on July 9, 1850; this example boasts a choice, bold signature.

From the collection of Mark S. Robbins.
