Description

Polk and Buchanan appoint the White House architect's son as U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia

Partly-printed DS, signed “James K. Polk" as president and "James Buchanan" as secretary of state, one page, 15.5 x .975, July 2, 1845. President Polk appoints James Hoban as "Attorney of the United States for the District of Columbia." Neatly signed at the conclusion in ink by President James K. Polk, and countersigned by Secretary of State James Buachanan. The embossed white paper seal affixed at the lower left remains intact. In fine condition.

James Hoban Jr. (1808–1846) was an American lawyer and the son of Irish-American architect James Hoban, who designed the White House. He served as the United States Attorney for the District of Columbia in the 1840s and, as a practicing lawyer in Washington, D.C., helped an enslaved man named Michael Shiner successfully petition for his freedom in 1836.

From the collection of Mark S. Robbins.
