Description

Partly-printed vellum DS as president, signed “M. Van Buren,” one page, 11 x 14, August 25, 1840. Scalloped-top ship's pass issued to the "Brig La Grange of Mattapoisett, Albert Daggett master or commander…mounted with no guns, navigated with 22 men, To Pass with her Company Passengers Goods and Merchandize without any hinderance seisure or molestation." Signed at the conclusion in ink by President Van Buren, and countersigned by Secretary of State John Forsyth. The embossed white paper seal affixed at the lower left remains intact. In fine condition, with fading to the handwritten text of the document; Van Buren's signature remains bold.
