Description

President Lincoln appoints a Superintendent of Indian Affairs for New Mexico, charged with handling Navajo and Apache relations

Civil War–dated partly-printed DS as president, signed “Abraham Lincoln,” one page, 20 x 15, January 22, 1864. President Lincoln appoints Michael Steck of Pennsylvania "to be Superintendent of Indian Affairs, for the Territory of New Mexico." Boldly signed at the conclusion in ink by President Abraham Lincoln, and countersigned by Secretary of the Interior John P. Usher. In very good condition, with creasing, edge toning, and multiple intersecting folds, none of which affect Lincoln's bold signature.

Michael Steck (1818–1880) was an American physician who became a long-serving Indian Agent and later Superintendent of Indian Affairs in the New Mexico Territory. After graduating from Jefferson Medical College and practicing medicine in Pennsylvania, he moved to New Mexico in 1849 as a contract surgeon and soon became Indian Agent to the Southern Apache, where he earned trust and helped manage relations with Native groups. Later appointed Superintendent by Abraham Lincoln, he initially supported, then opposed, plans to relocate the Navajo to Bosque Redondo, arguing for reservations in their homelands instead.
