ALS, two pages, 6 x 9, August 22, 1964. Handwritten letter to Bill Obbagy from the set of Gunsmoke, offering his thoughts on horror icon Bela Lugosi. In part: "I rec. your letter last evening and am sitting here behind the bar in the Longbranch (Gun Smoke set) trying to concentrate in all this noise. In answer to your request I found Bela to be rather odd compared to other actors I have worked with. Some days he was very friendly, others very quiet and moody, when he did open up he talked mostly of his early days as a matinee idol. He was very quick to object to any scene that did not meet with his approval, he in my opinion was a perfectionist and a finished actor. We will have to search far and wide to find an actor who can replace Bela especially in his chosen role as Dracula. I am giving you my opinion of Bela so that you may see that I know very little about him and nothing pertaining to his personal life.
As you know Lou Costello loved to kid around on the set and pull gags…every one on the set joined in the fun except Bela and he often remarked that we should not be playing when we were working. I hope I have said something that will help your biography. I realize you would want only facts and am sorry I can't help more…Bela was a fine man, a great actor, and my associations with him was tops. I repeat there was only one Bela Lugosi."
