Description

Manuscript DS, signed “John Quincy Adams" as president and "H. Clay" as secretary of state, one page, 9 x 14.75, October 5, 1826. President Adams officially recognizes Alexander Pillavoine as consul at Philadelphia, in part: "Alexander Pillavoine, having produced to me his Commission as Consul of His Majesty the King of France and Navarre for the Port of Philadelphia, I do hereby recognize him as such, and declare him free to exercise and enjoy such functions, powers and privileges, as are allowed to the Consuls of the most friendly powers in the United States." Boldly signed at the conclusion in ink by President John Quincy Adams, and countersigned by Secretary of State Henry Clay. The red seal is present but detached. In very good condition, with toning and soiling, a tear, minor losses, and fold separations; the signatures are choice and unaffected.
