Description

The 'Visit from St. Nicholas' poet remarks on his daughter's political predictions in January 1861: "She is afraid that we are on the eve of civil war"

Poet and scholar (1779-1863) remembered for his classic poem 'A Visit from St. Nicholas,' beginning with the iconic line, ''Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house.' ALS, one page both sides, 5 x 8, January 25, 1861. Handwritten letter to Sarah Hodges, in part: "I received your entertaining letter a few days ago and have not had spirit to answer it. If ever my eyes get well, it will be slow work. I can now use them during the day; but do not read at night. I sit in the corner, deaf and dumb; miserable work! and go to bed not long after the children. Yesterday, I had a letter from Theresa, asking my advice about coming come, and the state of our political affairs. She is afraid that we are on the eve of civil war. I tell her that I can do nothing but, like others, conjecture how all is to end, and that my guess is not worth having. She has taken her passage in the May steamer but had some thought of coming earlier. I have told her that I cannot see how our public affairs can affect her passing the ocean; and should choose the pleasantest and safest season." In very good to fine condition, with toning to the center panel, heavier on the signed side.
