H.G. Wells’s The Rights of Man; or, What Are We Fighting For? (1940) was a manifesto that set out his vision for universal human rights as the basis of a just postwar world. Written during the turmoil of World War II, Wells argued that a lasting peace required recognizing the inherent dignity and equality of all people. His ideas influenced later discussions that shaped the United Nations’ Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948.
