Irish dramatist (1880–1964) known for his portrayals of the Dublin working classes in plays like The Shadow of a Gunman (1923), Juno and the Paycock (1924), and The Plough and the Stars (1926). ALS, one page both sides, 8 x 10, Tingrith letterhead, August 19, 1949. Handwritten letter to a Jesuit priest, offering some remarks on the hypocrisy of Catholic ecumenicalism. In part: "I enclose two cuttings that may interest you. It is, again, the question of the material support of the Catholic schools by the State the Welfare State, which so aroused the scorn of Mr. Belloc & the late G.K. Chesterton. It amuses me to see the Prelates of the Church hot after the help the State can give them, while they denounce from the pulpit and platform, and altar even, the various ways in which the State is seeking to improve the life of the people…Here, in Totnes, we have a Roman Catholic Mayor (a very worthy man). When first chosen…all the other Totnes Councillors—all Anglican, Wesleyans, & Congregationalists—attended the service…Yet the other day, in Dublin, at the Memorial Service to Douglas Hyde, in Christ Church, all the Eire Cabinet [and] the Catholic big-nobs, waited outside on the lawn or in the porch, till the coffee came out, & they could join in the festivity with safety for their souls." In a lengthy postscript, he adds: "Cardinal Spellman maintains the dignity of apostolic silence 'His Eminence stays silent' Is it because he finds nothing to say? I've read his Eminence's book 'The Road to Victory' and it is the feeblest attempt at writing…It is daringly dull." In fine condition.
