Actor (1853-1937) best remembered today for portraying Sherlock Holmes on stage and in a 1916 silent film; his portrayal of Holmes helped create the modern image of the detective. Vintage matte-finish 9 x 12 photo of the classic stage actor in a pensive pose, signed and inscribed in white ink, "To Dr. David H. Jones, with sincere regard, William Gillette, Oct. 1919.” Matted and framed to an overall size of 11.75 x 14.75. In fine condition.
