Description

Military appointment signed by President Wilson one day after the assassination of Franz Ferdinand and one month before the start of the First World War

Partly-printed DS as president, one page, 15.5 x 19.25, June 29, 1914. President Wilson appoints Gooding Packard as an “Assistant Second Lieutenant in the Coast Artillery Corps in the service of the United States." Signed at the conclusion by Woodrow Wilson, and countersigned by Acting Secretary of War Henry Breckinridge. The blue War Office seal remains affixed to the lower left. In fine condition.

This document dates to the day after Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated in Sarajevo on June 28, 1914, a critical event that ushered in the July Crisis and paved the way for World War I, which erupted when Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia on July 28, 1914. On the same day President Wilson signed this document, he dispatched a telegram of condolences to Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph: ‘Deeply shocked of the atrocious murder of his Imperial and Royal Highness Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his consort at an assassin's hands. I extend to your Majesty, and to the royal family, and to the Government of Austria-Hungary the sincere condolences of the Government and people of the United States and an expression of my profound sympathy.’
