Description

A Christmas greeting from von Braun to a former top officer of the Peenemunde Army Research Center—“To Dr. Walter R. Dornberger, who opened the road to space which is now traveled by this 3000-ton ship"

Vintage color semi-glossy 8 x 10 photo of the launch of the Apollo 4 mission, the uncrewed first test flight of the Saturn V launch vehicle, the rocket that eventually took astronauts to the Moon, signed and inscribed in white ink to controversial German engineer and army officer Walter Dornberger, “To Dr. Walter R. Dornberger, who opened the road to space which is now traveled by this 3000-ton ship. With warmest personal regards and my best wishes for a Merry Christmas 1967, Wernher von Braun.” The reverse bears “A Kodak Paper” watermarks. In very good condition, with overall staining affecting appearance.

Major-General Dr. Walter Robert Dornberger (1895–1980) was a German Army artillery officer and a key leader of Nazi Germany’s V-2 rocket program at Peenemünde. After World War II, he was brought to the United States under Operation Paperclip, where he avoided prosecution for war crimes and spent decades working in senior aerospace roles with Bell Aircraft and Boeing. He played a major role in the creation of the North American X-15 aircraft and was a key consultant for the Boeing X-20 Dyna-Soar project. He also had a role in the creation of ideas and projects, which, in the end, led to the creation of the Space Shuttle. Dornberger also developed Bell's ASM-A-2, the world's first guided nuclear air-to-surface missile developed for the Strategic Air Command.
