Description

American cryptologist (1889–1958) who founded and led the Black Chamber, the first peacetime cryptanalytic organization in the United States and a forerunner of the National Security Agency. Under Yardley, the Black Chamber broke Japanese diplomatic codes and were able to furnish American negotiators with significant information during the Washington Naval Conference of 1921–1922. Partly-printed DS, signed “Herbert Yardley,” one page, 5 x 3, August 12, 1943. United States Postal Service return receipt card, signed at the center in pencil by Yardley to confirm his receipt of a registered and insured parcel from Ashley T. Cole. Postmarked at Chevy Chase, Maryland, on August 12, 1943. In fine condition.
