Description

"I feel it would be nice to be in a house where I had close friends, even though I want to live entirely separately and alone"

TLS, two pages, 6.75 x 10.25, personal letterhead, August 13, 1958. Letter to “Doc,” ostensibly family friend Ralph E. Cropley, in part: “I have talked to Jimmy and to Mr. Koons but I am so afraid they will not explain what I am asking from the Estate which I hope the Trustees will do for me. I have as you know been living in a small apartment here in the city. They have raised my rent $150 a month and I think it is ridiculous, so I would like to buy a house. Dr. and Mrs. David Gurewitsch are anxious to move into a house with an office downstairs and living quarters above and space to rent.

I do not want to own property in New York, so I would like the house in Dr. Gurewitsch' name. Therefore, would like the Estate to give me a mortgage for the full amount we pay. I think we can cover whatever changes we wish made in the house. If the Estate would give me the mortgage at five percent, I would see that my will was so worded that my estate would take the full [share] of the mortgage until it was paid off in full. We are planning to set it up on a 30 year interest and amortization plan and with the rentals we will be able to carry a house for rather less than we are now paying in rent. It seems to me that this is safe for the Estate since my estate can pay the whole mortgage as it would stand at my death and the interest would then be paid through [the] trust I am setting up in part to Anna until the bequests had been paid and then entirely to her. I will of course have the consent of all the children before this is finally done, as Jimmy asked me to do this.

If we find a house, we would need the money rather quickly and as things are high at the moment I hope you will be willing to give your consent. I feel it would be nice to be in a house where I had close friends, even though I want to live entirely separately and alone. I assure you that all the business interests will be carefully attended to because I know you must be able to pay out principal immediately on my death. With gratitude for everything you have already done and hoping this will not seem to you too much to ask from the Estate.” Roosevelt makes a few changes to the text in her own hand. In fine condition.
