American general officer (1851-1937) who served as a drummer boy in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He gained fame for his bravery on the battlefield, becoming the youngest noncommissioned officer in the history of the United States Army at the age of 12. ALS signed “Jno. L Clem, Chairman Legislative Com. G.A.R.,” one page both sides, 8.5 x 11, Headquarters Grand Army of the Republic letterhead, January 13, 1929. Handwritten letter to Newton Lample, in part: “I thank you for your kind remarks about the work of the G.A.R. Legislative Committee. We tried to keep out the 2 yrs clause but the Senators & Congressmen of the conference did not agree with us. We hope to have the new Bursum Bill by March 4. Judge Fuller introduced his bill in the House & we hope the conference, this time…will give something that the President will sign. I was born Aug. 13, 1851 & joined my home Co. 3 Ohio in June 1861, but on account of my youth, they would not enlist me. I was later enlisted in Co. ‘C’ Mich. I was just as much in the service while not enlisted, as I did my drumming just the same, before as after enlisting. I was ten ½ yrs old at Shiloh.” In fine condition.
