TLS signed “R.E.B.,” two pages, 8 x 10.5, United States Department of the Interior letterhead, February 6, 1942. Letter to Commander Robert A.J. English, in full: "By a stroke of good luck I managed to get hold of the Antarctic chart before it had gone to the printers. I want to find out from you the circumstances connected with your naming that 600 miles of coast line after yourself. Incidentally, I think it is about the longest stretch of coast line named after anyone in all of Antarctica. That I am puzzled is perfectly natural because Siple and I argued several hours with you about naming a coast line after you that was something like 150 miles long and you gave several very strong reasons for not having it named after you, one of which was that you did not feel that you deserved it. Now I find a lot of names on the chart that were not discussed by us. If you say that you got from me the idea I was not in any way interested in the naming of locations in that area you misunderstood me completely. My impression from you was that the names for that area as recommended by Black were to go on another bigger scale chart. So we seem to have had a complete misunderstanding. Of course I am interested in all the names that go on these maps. As for the names of the men on the Expedition, I intend to honor every one in accordance with the work he did on the Expedition. There are plenty of names left for that, a superabundance, and when the map of this area is made these men will be properly recognized. I am going back to Washington to be on duty there for several months and have already talked to Bryan over the telephone and am to talk to him further when I return to Washington. I would like you to answer me here, however, as I have several days of temporary duty here before returning. I was surprised you did not answer my last letter. I hope you will answer this one. It is important that I get your reaction before I talk to Captain Bryan… P.S. Siple wrote me a letter quoting from a letter you wrote him about the names around the East Base. He did not understand my feeling about the East Base names as you did." In fine condition.
