American politician (1873–1944) who served as governor of New York and who was the unsuccessful Democratic presidential candidate in 1928; he was the first Catholic to be nominated for president by a major party. Vintage glossy 10 x 8 photo of Alfred E. Smith seated at his desk, neatly signed in fountain pen. A "Bachrach" credit caption is affixed to the lower right corner, with a "Photograph by Bachrach" credit stamp to the reverse. In very good to fine condition, with scattered surface creases and light bands of vertical toning.
