Description

Partly-printed vellum DS as president, one page, 10 x 7, June 29, 1851. President Tyler appoints Charles E. Fleming as "Passed Midshipman in the Navy of the United States." Signed at the conclusion in ink by President John Tyler and countersigned by Secretary of the Navy George E. Badger. In very good condition, with torn tack holes to the corners, loss to the rough bottom edge, and Tyler's last name signed over a small, thin area of vellum.

Appointed by President William Henry Harrison, George E. Badger served as Secretary of the Navy from March 6–September 11, 1841, when he resigned amidst a general cabinet shakeup in the Tyler administration. Documents signed by Badger in the position are thus quite scarce.
