"I want to be governor of Arkansas because I believe that my record and experience prove that I can make a real difference in working to solve our economic problems"

TLS signed “Bill,” one page, 8.5 x 11, Clinton: Governor for Arkansas letterhead, May 19, 1982. Letter to Frank Drake, in full: "It's not news to you that Arkansas is in economic trouble today. We are facing the critical challenge of improving and diversifying our economy so that our people can have the kinds of jobs and income thay [sic] deserve.

I want to be governor of Arkansas because I believe that my record and experience prove that I can make a real difference in working to solve our economic problems. I am the only candidate who has set forth concrete proposals to address these issues, including setting up a system of financial assistance for Arkansas businesses, providing for better vocational training, and giving our farmers the kind of marketing and credit assistance they so desperately need. All of these steps will create new jobs and help keep the ones we have.

The support you have given me in previous races has been crucial to me. To be elected Governor, I need the help of my friends, again. We face tough opposition in the primary and general elections, but many good people are working hard, and we can certainly win. Now that we have reached the final days of the primary, I am asking if you will help me win this race with your vote, support, and a contribution.

If you can make a contribution, please send it to the Bill Clinton Campaign Fund at the address on this letter.

Hillary and I will be grateful for any help you can give us. We hope to hear from you soon." In fine condition.

After losing his bid for reelection in 1980, Bill Clinton launched a political comeback by running for governor of Arkansas in 1982. He campaigned on lessons learned from his previous term, emphasizing economic development and education reform, and won the election, beginning a decade-long tenure.
