Description

Chief Justice of the Supreme Court (born 1777) from 1836 until his death in 1864. Before holding that office, Taney served as secretary of the treasury and attorney general. Autograph document signed three times as “R. B. Taney,” one page, both sides, 7.75 x 12.75, 1807. Handwritten legal document from Roger B. Taney, concerning a financial dispute between Robert Swails and Robert Fish. Taney signs a total of three times: at the conclusion as “R. B. Taney, Plaintiff, Attorney”; within the text in the third-person, “R. B. Taney”; and in the docketing on the reverse, “R. B. Taney.” Matted and framed with a portrait to an overall size of 20.5 x 19.75; window to frame backing reveals the first page of the document. In fine condition, with a block of light toning to the first page.

Taney was admitted to the bar in 1799 at Annapolis and served one year in the Maryland House of Delegates before settling down in Frederick, Maryland, to practice law. He returned to the Maryland House of Delegates in 1816, when he was elected to the state senate. Taney later served as chief justice from 1835 to 1864; his court was noted for concerned rights granted by charters.
