The United Nations Trusteeship Council is one of the six principal organs of the United Nations (UN), established under Chapter XIII of the UN Charter in 1945. Its main purpose was to oversee the administration of Trust Territories—colonial territories placed under UN supervision after World War II—to ensure they were governed in the best interests of their inhabitants and to promote their progress toward self-government or independence.
