TLS, one page, 8.25 x 11, Linus Pauling Institute of Science and Medicine letterhead, June 22, 1978. Letter to Leonard Kreutz, in full: “I am pleased to answer your letter of 14 June 1978. My opinion about scientific research is that it is impossible to prevent basic discoveries in science from being made. These basic discoveries usually consist of new ideas, and of course a new idea that is really significant is one that has not been expected, so that nobody could take action to prevent it from coming along. Some new discoveries in basic science are obtained by an unexpected observation, usually in the course of an experiment. It is impossible to prevent an unexpected observation from being made.
Moreover, in the period immediately following the time when a new discovery was made no one can be sure about what its consequences will be for humanity or for the world as a whole. These consequences, moreover, involve developmental work. I think that it might well be good for individual scientists to decide whether or not they want to work along certain lines of developmental work, applications of scientific knowledge. For example, I belong to an organization of scientists interested in peace, who have essentially pledged themselves, taken an oath, not to work on the development of weapons for death and destruction, on military matters.” In very fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope.
