Description

Signed book: Memoirs by Harry S. Truman, Vol. I: Year of Decisions. First edition. NY: Doubleday & Company, 1955. Hardcover with dust jacket, 6 x 8.5, 596 pages. Signed and inscribed on the dedication page in fountain pen, "To the Honorable Eric Johnston, with kindest regards and happy memories of our association, from his good friend, Harry S. Truman, Independence, April 21, 1956.” In very good to fine condition, with dust jacket staining, soiling, and loss, and various rambling lunatic notes in another hand. Accompanied by a first edition of Memoirs by Harry S. Truman, Vol. II: Years of Trial and Hope.

The recipient is ostensibly Eric Johnston (1896–1963), a Republican Party activist who served as president of the United States Chamber of Commerce and later as president of the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA). As president of the MPAA, he abbreviated the organization's name, convened the closed-door meeting of motion picture company executives at New York City's Waldorf-Astoria Hotel that led to the Waldorf Statement in 1947 and the Hollywood blacklist (including the firing of the Hollywood Ten), and he discreetly liberalized the Motion Picture Production Code. Politically, Johnston acted as a U.S. government special projects administrator and envoy for both Democratic and Republican administrations. In January 1951, Johnston was appointed administrator of the Economic Stabilization Agency by President Harry S. Truman.
