Description

Ayn Rand applauds a theatre column by renowned lyricist Alan Jay Lerner—“I wanted to cheer at every paragraph and did, when I came to the statement that what we need is ‘a poetic theater, a romantic theater, a heroic theater, a moral theater and a theatrical theater’ (particularly this last)”

TLS, one page, 8.5 x 11, The Objectivist Newsletter letterhead, August 31, 1963. Letter to Oscar-winning lyricist and librettist Alan Jay Lerner, then serving as editor of the New York Times’ Sunday Theater Section, in full: “Please accept my enthusiastic congratulations for your article ‘Illuminate But Don't Eavesdrop’ in The New York Times, August 25. It is brilliantly reasoned and written. I wanted to cheer at every paragraph and did, when I came to the statement that what we need is ‘a poetic theater, a romantic theater, a heroic theater, a moral theater and a theatrical theater’ (particularly this last). I am enclosing a copy of a column I wrote for the Los Angeles Times, December 16, 1962, which you may find of interest.” In very good to fine condition, with some light creasing, and small dings to the top edge.

Accompanied by the referenced clipped column, which contains Rand’s scathing article entitled ‘Back to Barbarism? TV’s ‘Cyrano’ Shows Decline, which reads, in part: ‘The script was a butchered remnant of the play, slashed at random, with no greater knowledge than a vandal's of why ‘Cyrano de Bergerac’ is not to be condensed. The direction would have been embarrassing in a high school amateur production. The entire cast mouthed brilliant lines as if they were inarticulate grunts and it was hard to tell whether this was the ‘Method’ or just plain madness.’
