TLS, one page, 7.25 x 10.5, personal letterhead, October 13, 1958. Letter to Claude M. Monteiro, in full: “Thank you very much for sending me, with your letter of September 11th, the Confederate bond and the brochure on President Tyler and his Virginia home. I am glad to be able to add them to my collection, and I'm sorry that I have to return the two $1 bills unsigned. During my terms as President of the United States, I could, of course, autograph currency, but I lost that authority on leaving the White House. If I did so now, I would risk prosecution for defacement of currency.” Affixed to a same-size cardstock mount and in fine condition.
