Description

ALS signed “Lafayette,” one page, 7.75 x 9.75, June 15, 1830. Handwritten letter to J. S. Skinner in Baltimore, in part: "By the time this letter reaches you our beloved Frederick will have been arrived, we expect His excellent Mother in a few days after. Theodoric has been well settled at the pension. I shall know more of it this evening as Mr. de Tracy and Augustine are on their way to the Grange. Since Frederick’s departure I have received packages for him including Mr. Wheaton’s journal which I kept for Mr. Skinner. I thank you, my dear sir, for…the American Farmer, Turf magazine, and Niles Register for which I beg you to offer my affectionate acknowledgment to Mr. Niles. This letter will be delivered by Mr. Beslay whom I particularly recommend to you and Frederick. He is the son of a very distinguished member of farmes, and is going to be returned as new member for the Chamber du deputes having had the honor to be the first signer of the Brittany association for nonpayment of illegal taxes. Tell Frederick nothing new has taken place in the family. We have pretty good accounts of Jenny’s health. My son is gone to vote in the Department of Haute Soire, altho he is, as well as myself, a candidate in the Department. Adieu my good friends, I am charged with every person’s in the family loving commission to Frederick." Addressed on the integral leaf in Lafayette's hand. In very good to fine condition, with seal-related paper loss to the integral address leaf, and irregular toning from prior display.

The dog breed 'Great Pyrenees' was first introduced into the United States by Lafayette. Two of these dogs, the first breeding pair, were made a gift to the recipient of this letter, John Stuart Skinner (1788-1851) during Lafayette’s 1824 visit. Skinner founded and edited several agricultural magazines, including two referenced in this letter, and is considered the founder of agricultural journalism in the U.S. During the War of 1812 he and Francis Scott Key were appointed agents to effect a prisoner release and he was with Key during the bombardment of Fort McHenry which inspired Key to write the ‘Star Spangled Banner.' Frederick Skinner (1814-94) referenced in this letter, was J. S. Skinner’s son and later became a Confederate colonel.
