Revered English portrait painter (1723–1792) remembered for his promotion of the 'Grand Style.' Scarce ADS, signed "Joshua Reynolds," one page, 3.75 x 8, November 19, 1783. Handwritten financial document issued at London, acknowledging a final receipt of funds for a portrait Reynolds painted for the 15th Earl of Erroll. In full: “Received from John Wauchope, Esq. writer to the signer one hundred sixty three pounds five shillings being the amount of an account due to me by the late Earl of Erroll as particularly stated in my letter to Mr. Wauchope of the eighteenth of Octr last and which with all demands that I had against the the [sic] Earl are hereby discharged.” In fine condition, with a small punch hole to the top edge.
Reynolds painted a full-length portrait of the 15th Earl of Erroll in coronation robes and holding the baton of Lord High Constable of Scotland from the time Erroll officiated at the coronation of King George III in 1761. Reynolds's ledger records that Erroll sat for his portrait in March and April 1762 and that the fee was 100 guineas. This bill was still outstanding at the time of the Earl's death in 1778 and was not settled until 1783. John Wauchope (1750-1828) a solicitor, handled many of the financial matters of the Earl’s estate.
