Civil War-Era Model 1850 Staff and Field Officer's Sword, measuring 39 1/4" overall, with a 33 1/8" slightly curved blade having both wide and narrow fullers and etched panels on the forte along both sides. The blade is not maker marked and has an overall dark gray patina with spots of dark freckling along both faces, especially towards the tip, The etched panels depict an American Eagle with "E PLURIBUS UNUM" riband with sunburst and filigree on the obverse, and "U.S." with martial panoply on the reverse. The etching is still clear and well-defined, but the blade was sharpened at some point which removed the etching along the blade edge, The brass hilt is of standard pattern and has a pierced counterguard with single forward-swept quillon, dark gray shagreen grip with intact braided wire wrap, and a Phrygian helmet pommel. The brass has a dull ochre patina with some minor wear along the grip, and the "US" has been pointedly removed from original placement on the outside branch of the counterguard. The steel scabbard has turned to a dark plum-brown over time and the brass hanger bands and chape have developed an ochre patina that matches that of the hilt furniture.
