Description

President Wilson sends thanks to a relative of U. S. Grant—"You may be sure that it is a pleasure to me always to honor the memory of your grandfather"

TLS as president, one page, 6.75 x 8, White House letterhead, September 2, 1919. Letter to “Princess Cantacuzene,” Julia Grant Cantacuzene, the granddaughter of former American President U. S. Grant, in full: “It was very generous of you to write me your delightful letter of August 31st, and I thank you most sincerely. You may be sure that it is a pleasure to me always to honor the memory of your grandfather, and it is very pleasing to me to get a letter so full of genuine feeling. I am sure that Mrs. Wilson will be delighted to read the little book you are sending her, all the more because she will know the character and spirit of the author. I need not assure you and your distinguished husband of our deep and abiding interest in everything which affects Russia.” Double-matted with portraits of Wilson and Cantacuzene to an overall size of 22 x 12.5. In very good to fine condition, with faint toning, and some staining along the top edge.

The book received by the Wilsons was titled Revolutionary Days: Recollections of Romanoffs and Bolsheviki, published in 1919. It details the adventures of Princess Cantacuzene and her husband during the last days of the Russian autocracy, through the Russian Revolution, and into the Bolshevik regime. The prince and princess escaped to the United States in 1917, where Grant became an author and historian. She was born in the White House in 1876 as the daughter of Major General Frederick Dent Grant, the eldest son of President U.S. Grant. She married Prince Mikhail Cantacuzene in 1899 and lived to be 99 years old, dying in 1975. Like President Wilson, she was also buried in the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C.
