Early ALS, one page both sides, 7 St. Peters Square letterhead, January 11, 1954. Handwritten letter to Mr Ede, in full: “Forgive the terrible delay. I went away on holiday having forgotten to send you the Hamlet thing. Here it is. Will it do. Please please please don’t hesitate to say No. I won’t be the least offended. On the other hand I won’t know what to do if you want something very different from me. I shall be in town all this week, then in Paris for a few days and then I plunge into rehearsals, so my time will be as short as no doubt yours is. But do get someone who can think and write and know their theatre to do it — I feel hopeless.” In fine condition. By this point in his career, the 40-year-old thespian had performed in and directed several productions of Hamlet. His first was at the age of 22 in 1936, when he played the role of Osric in the West End and joined the Old Vic.
