Partly-printed DS as president, one page, 8 x 10, August 31, 1893. President Cleveland authorizes and directs the Secretary of State to cause the Seal of the United States to be affixed to “envelope containing my letter addressed to Her Majesty Victoria, on the marriage of her Grandson the Duke of York with the Princess Mary of Teck.” Signed neatly at the conclusion by Grover Cleveland. In fine condition.
The wedding of Prince George, Duke of York, and Princess Victoria Mary of Teck took place at the Chapel Royal, St. James’s Palace, in London, on July 6, 1893. George, then second in line to the British throne, married Mary, a princess of the Teck family with close ties to European royalty. Upon their marriage, Mary became Her Royal Highness The Duchess of York. The couple spent their honeymoon at Sandringham, the Prince of Wales’ estate in Norfolk, before visiting Osborne House to stay with the Queen.
Their marriage not only proved highly significant for the future of the British monarchy — George and Mary had six children, including future kings Edward VIII and George VI — but their partnership, which was admired for its steadiness, devotion, and sense of duty, came to symbolize the ideal of a stable, enduring royal couple. A noteworthy presidential document related to an important and joyous event in British history.
