Description

President Pierce sends a letter of congratulations to Justo José de Urquiza, the new president of Argentina

Partly-printed DS as president, one page, 8 x 10.5, July 10, 1854. President Pierce authorizes and directs the Secretary of State to affix the Seal of the United States to “the Envelope of a letter addressed to His Excellency Justo Jose de Urquiza, President of the Argentine Confederation.” Signed crisply at the conclusion in ink by President Franklin Pierce. In fine condition, with some light creasing and faint toning.

Justo José de Urquiza was an Argentine general and politician (1801–1870) who served as governor of the province of Entre Ríos, as leader of the Federal Party, and as president of the Argentine Confederation between 1854 and 1860. In 1852, he led the Ejército Grande (Grand Army) that defeated Juan Manuel de Rosas at the Battle of Caseros, ending his 17-year reign. The following year he convened a Constituent Congress that approved Argentina's first national constitution, the Constitution of 1853, which established the legal foundations of the current Argentine Republic. In 1854, he was elected as the first President of the Argentine Confederation, a position he held for six years, thus also becoming Argentina's first constitutional president.
