President Arthur sends a letter to Queen Victoria, congratulating her on the birth of a granddaughter, Princess Beatrice of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, the youngest daughter of Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh, and Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna of Russia

Partly-printed DS as president, one page, 8 x 10, June 30, 1884. President Arthur authorizes and directs the Secretary of State to cause the Seal of the United States to be affixed to an “envelope containing my letter addressed to Her Majesty Victoria, Queen of Great Britain & Ireland +c +c +c on behalf of a Princess daughter of His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh.” Signed prominently at the conclusion in ink by President Chester A. Arthur. In fine condition.

Princess Beatrice was born on April 20, 1884, at Eastwell Park, Kent. Her father was Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh, the second son of Queen Victoria and Albert, Prince Consort, and her mother was Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna of Russia, the only surviving daughter of Alexander II of Russia and Princess Marie of Hesse and by Rhine. Beatrice, who was called ‘Baby Bee’ by her family, later married into the Spanish royal family and was the wife of Prince Alfonso de Orleans y Borbón, Infante of Spain, a first cousin of Alfonso XIII of Spain.
