Impressive three-volume book set: Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan, Performed in the Years 1852, 1853, and 1854, under the command of Commodore M. C. Perry, United States Navy, by order of the Government of the United States, by Francis L. Hawks. First edition. Washington: A.O.P. Nicholson, 1856. Hardcover handsomely bound in half-leather, 10 x 12, 1633 pages, with rare suppressed bathing plate (v. 1 p. 408). The first two volumes consist of a well-illustrated narrative of the expedition, with numerous folded maps inserted as an appendix to Vol. II; the third volume is entitled "Observations on the Zodiacal Light from April 2, 1853 to April 22, 1855," by Rev. George Jones. Book condition: VG-/None, with splitting and losses to some of the folded maps, and some foxing to textblocks.
