Description

"The provision requiring a Republican form of government is contained in the Federal Constitution"

Founder and editor of the New York Tribune (1811-1872) who used the power of his newspaper to advocate for a variety of liberal causes, most importantly the call for emancipation of slaves during the Civil War. ALS, one page both sides, 5 x 8, September 27, 1858. Addressed from New York, a handwritten letter to a gentleman by the name of “Bernstein,” answering a set of questions, in part: “1. Mr. Adams was elected U.S. Senator by the ‘Union Party’ of Mississippi – that is, the party which supported the Compromise Measures of 1850. I think he was formerly a Wig and, on the dissolution of the Union Party, became an American. 2. Senator Thompson of Ky. was formerly a Wig… 3. I cannot quote the provision of the Louisiana Treaty you refer to. I think you will find it in the Wig Almanac of about 1850. Its purport is that the people of Louisiana shall be admitted into the Union on the same terms…as are accorded to the people or other states. It says nothing about Republicanism. The provision requiring a Republican form of government is contained in the Federal Constitution.” In fine condition.
