Description

Roosevelt presents African Game Trails to an American wildlife photographer and conservationist

Signed book: African Game Trails. First edition. NY: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1910. Hardcover bound in brown cloth, top edge gilt, 6.5 x 9.5, 529 pages. Boldly signed and inscribed on the first free end page, "To William L. Finley, with the high regard of Theodore Roosevelt, Nov. 11th, 1911." Autographic condition: fine, with a very faint bend to the signed page. Book condition: VG/None, with sunning to spine and a few pencil notations to front pastedown. Accompanied by a handsome custom-made quarter-leather clamshell case with marbled boards.

Just after leaving the White House, Theodore Roosevelt famously undertook the Smithsonian-Roosevelt African Expedition in 1909–1910. This trip was a defining moment in Roosevelt's post-presidential legacy and resulted in his authorship of African Game Trails, detailing the "African wanderings of an American hunter-naturalist." The recipient of this example, William L. Finley, was an American wildlife photographer who corresponded with Roosevelt on conservationist topics. In 1905, Finley and Herman T. Bohlman visited and photographed Lower Klamath Lake and Tule Lake. Their report in the November–December issue of Bird Lore helped to influence President Roosevelt's decision to set those areas aside as federal bird reservations. A superb presentation copy of Roosevelt's impressive book.
