Description

Admiral (1813-1891) who cooperated with Gen. U. S. Grant during the Vicksburg Campaign and later dedicated himself to improving the Navy as the superintendent of the US Naval Academy. Partial LS, one page both sides, 8 x 10, no date but circa 1868–1870. Conclusion of a letter to Commander E. Y. McCauley at the Portsmouth Navy Yard, in part: "I should be very happy to arrange the matter for you but I do not see what can be done in opposition to the opinions of those conversant with the subject. You know when a case of this kind comes up before the auditors they contest it very strongly and I have to be very careful how I advise the Secretary for if my opinion should happen to be overruled by the auditors he might think I did not know as much of the subject as I pretended…I will look further into this matter and see what I can do for you." In very good to fine condition, with small splits at edges of folds and minor loss along one edge.
