Description

A White House welcome from President Zachary Taylor—"On entering the Green Room, which you will recollect, I had a hearty grasp from the President with a pleasant salutation"

Industrialist (1810-c. 1885) who co-founded the Ames Manufacturing Company, which produced arms, swords, and light artillery during the Civil War. ALS signed “Jas. T. Ames,” eight pages, 8 x 10, January 18, 1850. Lengthy handwritten letter to his wife, Ellen, describing his trip to Washington, the climate, and his impressions of the city. He details particularly his visit with President Taylor: “I went without company or gloves determined to look at men and manners. On entering the Green Room, which you will recollect, I had a hearty grasp from the President with a pleasant salutation. Just back of him stood Maj. Bliss and Old Zack's daughter Betty." He expounds on Mrs. Bliss' charm and kindness: “She is simple in manners and dress, not having anything that would attract particular notice, but every faculty was exercised to adopt herself to the various persons introduced and she had what I believe is real politeness because it seemed to come from a good common sense guided by real kindness.” In fine condition.
