Description

Partly-printed vellum DS as president, signed “M. Van Buren,” one page, 13.75 x 17.75, April 1, 1839. President Van Buren appoints Osborne Cross as a “Captain in the First Regiment of Infantry in the service of the United States.” Signed neatly at the conclusion by Martin Van Buren and countersigned by Secretary of War Joel R. Poinsett. The original white seal remains affixed to the upper left portion. In very good to fine condition, with scattered small stains, and light toning along the folds.

Osborne Cross (1803–1876) was a Civil War veteran and an 1825 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, who served in infantry postings until 1836, when he was assigned to the United States Army Quartermaster Department. He would serve as a quartermaster for the rest of his military career. On July 29, 1866, he was appointed Assistant Quartermaster General with the rank of Colonel and continued to hold that position until March 13, 1865, when he was breveted Brigadier General, and on July 29, in the following year, he was placed on the retired list.
