Five TLSs, signed either as “J. Edgar Hoover,” “J. E. Hoover,” “Edgar,” or “J. E. H.,” each one page, ranging in size from 7 x 9.25 to 8 x 10.5, dated between 1927 and 1964, covering nearly four decades of Hoover’s tenure as director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Sections of the letters, ordered chronologically, read as follows:
July 28, 1927, to C. W. Fisher: “The approbation of the U. S. Attorney at Danville and the General Counsel for the U. S. Veterans Bureau of your investigation reflected in your reports in this case is very gratifying. I wish you to know that it will be made of record in your personnel file and has been personally noted by me.
January 17, 1938, to Sidney Brandt: “Your postal card postmarked January 5, 1938, has been received, requesting my autographed photograph. Pursuant to your request I am enclosing my photograph which I have had the pleasure of autographing for you.”
February 7, 1949, to Sherman Billingsley: “The humidor with the cigars arrived today and I want to thank you again for your great thoughtfulness and kindness.”
April 7, 1971, to FBI official Thomas E. Bishop: “I was deeply touched by your letter of April 5th regarding the present attacks on me and the Bureau, and the quotation you set forth from Abraham Lincoln was most encouraging. This storm swirling around us will be weathered, I feel certain, particularly when you consider the source. By continuing day by day doing our job and carrying out our responsibilities to the best of our ability, the record will speak for itself.”
May 15, 1964, to FBI official Ted Brichetto: “It was most thoughtful of you to remember my Anniversary as Director of the FBI. Your kind remarks and congratulations are very much appreciated. President Johnson's Executive Order waiving mandatory retirement in my behalf was certainly a great honor for me, and I want to thank you for your comments concerning his action.” In overall very good to fine condition, with an old tape stain to the 1938 letter. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope for the Brichetto letter, and a certificate of authenticity from PSA/DNA for the Bishop letter.
