TLS, one page, 7.25 x 9.5, personal FBI letterhead, December 31, 1963. Letter to Allen W. Smith, executive editor of The Herald-News, in full: “I have seen the editorial captioned ‘The Sinatra Case’ which appeared in the December 17th issue of your paper. The kind comments concerning the FBI mean a great deal to my associates and me, and we want you to know of our appreciation.” In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope.
This letter assuredly relates to the kidnapping of 19-year-old Frank Sinatra, Jr., the son of famed singer and actor Frank Sinatra, who was kidnapped from Harrah's Lake Tahoe and held for ransom on December 8, 1963. He was released two days later after his father paid the $240,000 ransom demanded by the kidnappers (equivalent to $2,460,000 in 2024). Thanks to the help of Hoover’s FBI, Barry Keenan, Johnny Irwin, and Joe Amsler were soon captured, prosecuted for kidnapping, convicted, and sentenced to long prison terms, of which they served only small portions.
