World War II-era ALS signed ?Ike,? three pages, 6 x 9, no date. Handwritten letter to his wife, Mamie D. Eisenhower, in full: ?The past several days have been hectic ones and I fear I've not written as regularly as usual. You should not count on too regular a schedule in my letters, because my life is not a normal one. This is Tuesday and the most recent letter I sent you was on Sat. morn ? a note I wrote during a wakeful Friday night.
I am sorry you were so keenly disappointed about my not coming home. For fear that you would be I had purposely omitted all mention of such a possibility in my past letters - for plans are always subject to instant change. The fact is I must not leave here at this time, particularly when there's a chance that weather might run my absence to 2 or even 3 weeks. Will I be glad when this war is over? The usual interruption took place between these two sheets. This sentence is six hours later than the preceding one.
There's been a round of heavy colds which, thank the lord both Butch & I have missed, to date. A cold always knocks me so low I'm hoping I'll continue to be lucky! In fact I need one whole of a lot of luck all the way round - these days. I think I should take an afternoon & go searching for a rabbit's foot ? a 4 leaf clover & a horseshoe.
The Russian fight continues to stir me to the depths of my soul. They're hitting so hard that no one can fail to admire them. I hope they kill a million Huns ? even more! And I wish we could be hammering at the d? Germans, this instant, just as hard and on as big a scale as the Russians. (Just back from lunch) 3:00 p.m. I've got to write an article as a preface to a publication. I shudder to start ? as it will be difficult ? but guess I'd better get at it. Lots of love to you & my best to all our friends. Don't forget me.? In very fine condition.
The two principal belligerent powers were Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union, along with their respective allies. Though never engaged in military action on the Eastern Front, the United Kingdom and the United States both provided substantial material aid to the Soviet Union. The Eastern Front was the largest and bloodiest theatre of World War II. It is generally accepted as being the deadliest conflict in human history, with over 30 million killed as a result. The German armed forces suffered 80% of their military deaths on the Eastern Front. It involved more land combat than all other World War II theatres combined.
