Partly-printed DS as president, signed “Benj. Harrison,” one page, 22.75 x 18.75, December 21, 1889. President Harrison appoints Robert W. Turner as “Consul of the United States of America at Cadiz.” Boldly signed at the conclusion in black ink by President Benjamin Harrison, and countersigned by Secretary of State James G. Blaine. The embossed white paper seal affixed at the lower left remains intact. In fine condition, with intersecting folds.
During his tenure as U.S. Consul General to Cadiz, Spain (1889–1893), Robert Wilson Turner played a crucial role in advancing American trade interests. He translated Spain's commercial laws, a work published by the U.S. Department of State, and secured vital information that led to a treaty lifting a ban on American meats. Additionally, he collaborated with the U.S. Navy to oversee the construction of replicas of Columbus' ships—Pinta, Niña, and Santa María—for the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition, earning recognition from the Sociedad Columbina de España. His diplomatic contributions significantly strengthened U.S.-Spain economic relations.
