Description

As New York's newly elected governor, FDR considers the appointment of Frances Perkins—later the first-ever woman cabinet secretary

TLS, one page, 7.25 x 10.5, Fidelity and Deposit Company of Maryland letterhead, December 26, 1928. Letter to Marion Lounsbury Foster, a director of the American Red Cross, in part: "Thank you for your letter of December 14th on behalf of Miss Frances Perkins. I am, however, not taking up the question of appointments until I get to Albany. I shall be glad to give the matter consideration at that time." In very good to fine condition, with toning from prior display.

Frances Perkins (1880–1965) was American workers-rights advocate who held several positions in the New York state government. In 1929, the newly elected New York governor, Franklin Roosevelt, appointed Perkins as the inaugural New York state industrial commissioner. In 1933, she became the first woman ever to serve in a presidential cabinet when FDR named her as United States Secretary of Labor, a position she held until 1945.
