Description

Mere hours after the Battle of Waterloo—"The army of the Duke of Wellington obtained a glorious victory. It has been a complete and full victory for our armies. The enemy has been completely defeated and routed back"

Dutch statesman (1778-1848) who held several important posts under the Kingdom of Holland and the Sovereign Principality of the United Netherlands, before he was appointed as one of the Commissioners-General of the Dutch East Indies. Fascinating ALS in French, signed “Baron de Capellen,” one page both sides, 7.5 x 9, June 19, 1815, at three o´clock in the morning, only hours after the Battle of Waterloo took place. Addressed from Brussels, a handwritten letter from Godert van der Capellen as the Secretary of State, reflecting on the historic events of the day prior, in part (translated): “His Royal Highness the Prince of Orange has arrived to Brussels…Nevertheless towards 8h in the evening, H.R.H was wounded by a bullet which went through his left arm near the shoulder. The wound is not dangerous and the health of H.R.H has not suffered. The battle yesterday was sanguinary and the result brilliant. The army of the Duke of Wellington obtained a glorious victory. It has been a complete and full victory for our armies. The enemy has been completely defeated and routed back. They have lost over one hundred cannons. Marshal Prince Blucher having joined the Duke of Wellington, their armies are pursuing the enemy beyond Genappe.” In fine condition.
