English engineer, industrialist, scientist, and inventor (1810–1900) who founded what became Armstrong Whitworth, a manufacturer of armaments, ships, locomotives, automobiles, and aircraft; he famously designed a hydraulic accumulator and the Armstrong gun. Uncommon 4.25 x 6.25 cabinet photo of Armstrong by Lock & Whitfield, neatly signed in ink, "W. S. Armstrong." In very good to fine condition, with scattered foxing.
